COWICHAN VALLEY – The Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce marked its 115th anniversary at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, November 28rd, 2023, at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club with a 1908 feel. A fantastic crowd of 61 was in attendance, representing 45 member organizations. Members conducted general business for the organization and acclaimed seven new and returning Directors to the Board (outlined below).
The event began with a 1908-themed Photo Booth, offering guests a unique and immersive experience dressed in period accurate costumes. There was a panel of speakers who talked about the history of business in the Cowichan Valley. Among the speakers were Carolyn Prellwitz from the Cowichan Historical Society and Mayor Michelle Staples, who discussed various aspects of the region’s rich history and the evolving landscape of local industries like lumber, agriculture, and tourism.
The event also highlighted the heritage of one of the valley’s oldest businesses, Dobson’s Glass, while Denise McKinlay‘s overview of the Cowichan Valley’s past was shared in her absence. Phil Reilander from the Chamber offered his insights into the future of integration of technology in local businesses. The event also served a charitable purpose, with a collection drive for Toys, Toiletries and Toques.
David van Deventer, the President of the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce and the evening’s master of ceremonies, spoke insightfully about the Chamber’s role in advocating for its members. He stressed the importance of how we’re better together, and detailed how the Chamber not only supports local businesses but also plays a crucial role in shaping broader policies. David explained that the advocacy issues addressed by the Chamber often extend to the BC Chamber of Commerce, where they contribute significantly to policy formation. This process demonstrates the power of collective effort and the impact that a united local business community can have on regional and provincial policy-making, enhancing the business environment for all members.
Treasurer Leah Hudson and Anna Jones, Church Pickard, who performed the Annual Audit, reported significant financial growth this year, with an increase in membership dues revenue and a net gain of 30 members, reaching 619 as of August 31, 2023. The Chamber’s strong membership base reflects confidence in its advocacy, networking, and community showcasing efforts. The Cowichan Regional Visitor Centre (CRVC) also saw heightened activity, benefiting from global travel resumption and local product sales. While events like the Black Tie Awards and Dine & Sip Cowichan were successful in community engagement, the Chamber faced challenges with rising operational costs, particularly in human resources. Nonetheless, the year was marked by accomplishments and a steadfast commitment to supporting the local business community.
Executive Director Sonja Nagel highlighted a year of significant progress, shifting focus from pandemic challenges to reinforcing the vision of building a strong community through business strength. She proudly announced the Chamber’s membership growth to over 600, making it one of the largest on Vancouver Island. Sonja applauded the dedication of the internal team and Chamber and Visitor Centre staff, whose efforts have enhanced member and visitor experiences.
Key achievements of 2023 included the successful Black Tie Awards, the return of in-person events like Wellness Wednesdays and the Dine and Sip Cowichan Festival, and the introduction of Corporate Sponsorships. Celebrating a decade at the current Visitor Centre location and technological upgrades were also highlighted. Sonja concluded with a forward-looking message, emphasizing the Chamber’s ongoing commitment to business growth and community connectivity.
