NANAIMO – The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce has released its plans for a Nanaimo All Candidates Debate it is organizing for October 14. The event will take place at Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC) starting at 6:30 PM in preparation for the federal election on October 19.
“Educated and engaged voters are one of the keys to good government”, said Kim Smythe, Chamber President and Chief Executive Officer. “Because we have what looks like a tight race locally and nationally, it’s important to get as much information to voters as possible.”
Tables will be provided in the lobby for each candidate to present their campaign information and act as a focal point for discussions. This interaction will go on for about an hour before candidates take to the stage for the formal debate part of the evening. The four federal parties will be represented by candidates Mark MacDonald (Conservatives), Sheila Malcolmson (NDP), Paul Manly (Green Party) and Tim Tessier (Liberals).
“We’ve set aside 90 minutes for debate between the candidates and questions from the audience. Questions need to be provided in advance by email to the Chamber. Questions will also be taken from the floor and scrutinized for the moderator. Candidates will not have the questions in advance.” Smythe explained.
Admission to the event is free, but as the session is expected to attract attention interested individuals should come early to ensure getting a seat. The debate is being organized as a courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce, and questions on any subject may be emailed in advance to reception@nanaimochamber.bc.ca.
