BRITISH COLUMBIA – Thinking inside the box is what the Great Little Box Company/Ideon Packaging (GLBC) does best.
Big, little and everything in between, as they have been making corrugated boxes of every size for a multitude of products since 1982.

“We pride ourselves in being a preferred pack-aging company that people come to for pack-aging solutions,” says Luigi Scaglione, Vice President Sales – Corrugated & Industrial Packaging. “We offer single source shopping, where you can get multiple mediums depending on what you want printed: Corrugated, digital corrugated, folding cartons, and labels. We also provide protective packaging and a full gamut of shipping supply products to safely ship product in. We pride ourselves in doing that.”

The business was built on corrugated boxes. “That was our core business, and that’s what has enabled us to continue to grow,” Scaglione states. “We’ve added things such as folding carton, and now we’re the largest folding carton manufacturing facility in western Canada.”

All of their products are made at their Richmond manufacturing plants with local distribution centres in Kelowna and Victoria.

“With every product we make, we can package them up in a bundle and give our customers a choice, including if they want their retail boxes and labels printed on them so they can be shipped out,” he explains. “We manufacture all this in-house, and it gives customers the added assurance that they’ll get everything they want in one place, instead of going to three different vendors.”

GLBC is privately owned by the Meggy family that purchased the operation out of receivership in 1982 and have grown to where it now employs 500 workers that has won many awards, including being named one of Canada’s Top Employers. “We are a company that invests in its people and we are known as a trusted partner that is there to help people,” notes Scaglione.
The company is very serious about protecting the environment, and purposes to be a good environmental steward.

“We’re looking at some new green initiatives,” he states.

“There is currently a ban on EPS (expanded polystyrene,) so we are manufacturing our own Earthsaver TM compostable packing peanuts out of starch. That’s something we do locally, and we’re also looking at other ways of doing things better.”

That includes distributing Pregis EverTech TM mailers, like those used by Amazon, which is 100 per cent recyclable.

“We’re always looking for opportunities like these,” he says. “Many of our customers are environmentally conscious. For example, Victoria Epicure and Level Ground Coffee are two customers that are always looking to lessen their environmental footprint, and that is the first thing that comes to their minds.”

GLBC continues to grow year over year, and Scaglione says that allows them to invest in new equipment to make even better products.

“Our success is definitely due to the people we have,” he explains. “The Meggy family that owns the company treats people with respect and like a big family, and the people work hard for those that they love.”
