VANCOUVER ISLAND – It’s not always easy choosing the right accounting firm for a small business. Finding the ideal company can be a lot like finding the right shoes, they need to fit well, be cost-effective and satisfy all your functional needs. Fortunately, the right team exists here in Nanaimo, and wants to be as close to you as you are to your business.

“Almost eight years ago, we moved from Calgary to open a business in Nanaimo,” said Norm Wolf, Managing Partner at New Heights Accounting Corporation. “A year later, we bought out an accountant who was planning to retire and took over his books, which really rooted us in the community and brought us closer to our new home.”

Norm and his wife Anna run New Heights Accounting Corporation, a small business accounting firm in Bowen Road in Nanaimo that has steadily been growing since its opening. Since relocating to the Island, Norm has taken it upon himself to invest in the community and become a staple in the local business sector.

“Our philosophy was that we wanted to specialize in small businesses. We niche marketed ourselves, if a company is too large, it probably won’t suit our expertise,” said Norm. “By doing that, we can focus directly on what we can do to make clients more successful, to ensure they keep growing.”

Previously, Norm worked as a contract auditor in Calgary and attained an MBA from the University of Calgary. Anna currently holds a CPA and was previously a medical physician in China. Around 2020 when COVID-19 was making its impact on the world, Norm and his wife found the right space for an office in the Bowen Professional Centre on Bowen Road and took the leap to open their physical location just as everyone was moving to their homes to work remotely.

The challenge was one that Norm and his wife welcomed, and as the two became more acquainted with the businesses in the Nanaimo area, they started to feel they were a vital piece in the Nanaimo business puzzle.

Norm was recently named local businessperson of the year by Alignable Alliance of Nanaimo and was the president of the Nanaimo Executive Association. He continues to build connections in the city and hopes to continue to help for years to come.

“We treat people like friends and our mission statement is based on the idea that ‘we want to partner in our clients’ success,’” said Norm. “When our clients can get their financial commitments completed with little to no disruption to their business, then we believe we have done our job and can feel part of our customers upward growth, which ultimately benefits our community as a whole.”
