QUALICUM BEACHSaywell Contracting has begun site preparations for the ‘Residences at Qualicum Station’ development project. The project will provide 56 affordable housing units on Town-owned land located at the intersection of Railway Street and Village Way.

As part of the land designated for multi-residential development in the Town’s Official Community Plan, this new housing development will ensure a high quality of life for families, workers, seniors, and those living with disabilities in Qualicum Beach.

“In line with our Official Community Plan, the Town is exploring ways to collaborate with community groups and senior levels of government to develop affordable housing,” says Luke Sales, Director of Planning for the Town of Qualicum Beach. “The Residences at Qualicum Station will expand affordable housing options for people that are living, working or studying in the local community.”

“The Housing Society is pleased that site preparation work is beginning. This project will bring much needed housing options to our community, and we look forward to working with the contractor and community in bringing The Residences at Qualicum Station to Qualicum Beach,” says the Qualicum-Parksville Kiwanis Housing Society.

In the initial stage of the project, trees that are located within the building and parking lot footprint will be removed. Trees in the peripheral area, or outside of the lease area, will not be affected unless hazards are identified. In accordance with the approved landscape plan, the contractor will plant trees in later stages of the development process. To ensure further compliance with provincial regulations around tree removal, Saywell Contracting has engaged a biologist to audit the site regularly, particularly to monitor for bird nesting.

The Town will work in partnership with Saywell Contracting to implement a traffic management plan that meets safety requirements and minimize disruption for local residents and businesses. To ensure a safe construction process, the Town asks residents to practice caution around the development perimeter.

Construction is expected to take approximately 19 months, and Saywell Contracting and the Qualicum-Parksville Kiwanis Housing Society are committed to keeping neighbouring property owners informed throughout the project’s duration. The Town will also work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure a transparent and respectful process.
