NANAIMO – Fineline Road Marking Ltd. has been leaving its marks all over Vancouver Island, keeping up with the busy construction and development industries.
While doing that, owner Paul Skalenda is gearing up for the future by upgrading equipment, materials and techniques to meet expected demand.
“We have ordered new electric pavement marking machines in order to work quieter at night and with less pollution. “We plan on upgrading all the machines to electric within the next two years,” says Skalenda, who bought Fineline in 1995, a year after it started, and has grown the firm to 15 employees. “Although it cuts down on future work, we often recommend that a customer invest in the longer lasting durable marking materials that we offer, that would last many years longer.”

Parking lots and road, highway and airport pavement markings are the mainstays of Fineline, although Skalenda notes the company is continuously painting game courts, including for the increasingly popular pickle ball game – for communities and where people install them at their homes.
“We do high quality work for every customer, from a $500 small parking lot to a $300,000 roadway project,” Skalenda notes. “Fineline does the ‘icing on the cake’ of a new project. While there might be millions of dollars of infrastructure buried under ground or in the new building, we do the final details that make a new road or building stand out.

“An impressive sight to some would not just be our final markings, but with all of the chalk-lines showing the measurements and calculations used to get there.”
Skalenda points out that Fineline’s sophisticated machines, including laser technology, and staff make sure each job is done right.
“We do not ‘eyeball’ the work – every marking in a parking lot or roadway that we work on is measured, squared-in to be parallel, perpendicular and centred as required,” he states.
With the growth the company is experiencing, Skalenda is always on the lookout for new employees.
“We pay our employees the highest wages possible, so that we can hire the best employees in order to offer our customers the best results,” he notes. “Investing in the best equipment, and investing in our employees by paying excellent wages, bonuses and training upgrades, is what keeps us on top.
“While we may have over a million dollars in trucks and equipment, our employees are the backbone of the company. They represent myself and the company every time they are out on the road and on the jobsite, and they make us proud.”
