VANCOUVER ISLAND – The Vancouver Island Runners Association (VIRA) that operates the Vancouver Island Race Series (VIRS) in partnership with member clubs has formally elected Christopher Kelsall, as president during the association’s recent AGM. Additionally, he has been hired as general manager of the series.
The series operates eight and sometimes nine road races on Vancouver Island with four in Greater Victoria (Sooke, Sidney, North Saanich, Colwood) as well as one each in Cobble Hill, Nanaimo, Port Alberni and Courtenay. Racing begins in January and continues to April.
The Island Series started in 1984. It took to virtual racing during the pandemic for two seasons, but returned to near normal with increased registrations for 2022.
“I am pleased to take over as president from Jonathan Foweraker and general manager from Louise Hodgson-Jones who spent six years each at the helm. They leave the series in great financial shape with increased participation, sponsorship and funding.”
“I would like to thank the hiring committee of Chris Sullivan (secretary), Rob Hare (board and race director of Bazan Bay (5K) and Bob Reid (VP) for the opportunity to interview for the position.”
The series provides racing opportunities to varsity athletes, Olympians, competitive age group and masters runners as well as walkers and participants of all ages.
