BRITISH COLUMBIA – The Province is committing $36 million to active transportation infrastructure projects over the next three years, helping to create more livable and sustainable communities throughout British Columbia.
“Investing in active transportation infrastructure is about even more than supporting safe cycling – it’s also about connecting people and communities,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of State for Infrastructure. “These grants will help enable healthier, more livable communities of all sizes.”
Through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant program, the Province is partnering with Indigenous, local and regional governments to make cost-sharing investments in active transportation network plans and infrastructure. Past projects include active transportation plans, new or enhanced safety improvements to sidewalks, improved lighting along pathways, multi-use and protected travel lanes, and end-of-trip amenities that connect people to public transit, downtowns and schools.
Applications to receive up to $500,000 are open from June 24 to July 30, 2021. The percentage of provincial funding is determined by a cost-share sliding scale that supports Indigenous communities and communities with a smaller population tax base:
- Indigenous community or local government(s) working in partnership with an Indigenous community – 80 per cent provincial funding
- Population less than 15,000 – 70 per cent provincial funding
- Population between 15,000 and 25,000 – 60 per cent provincial funding
- Population over 25,000 – 50 per cent provincial funding
Investments through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant Program will help meet the infrastructure needs of Indigenous, rural and urban communities, so people of all ages and abilities can benefit from better connections between neighbourhoods, schools, work, transit stations and downtowns.
