Comox Valley Sees Population Growth of 4.7%

February 28, 2017

COMOX VALLEY – The recent release of 2016 population data from the Statistics Canada Census shows the Comox Valley having a total population of 66,527, an increase of 2,989 from the previous census in 2011.

The 2016 census provides the first major snap shot of the population and dwelling trends. Data are presented for the population, total private dwellings and dwellings occupied by usual residents.

“The Census results represent a solid growth performance for the Comox Valley. Most population growth is driven by migration, so this suggests that the Valley is continuing to attract new residents at a higher rate than most rural areas of BC,” said Jamie Vann Struth, Vann Struth Consulting Group which has worked with Comox Valley Economic Development (CVEDS) on various economic impact and statistical analysis projects for the region.

With an overall population growth rate of 4.7%, the Comox Valley ranks in the top five fastest growing rural regional districts in the province. Within the Comox Valley specifically, all municipalities and electoral areas showed positive growth, with the largest share (46%) in the City of Courtenay.

A component of Comox Valley Economic Developments’ 5 year Strategic Plan and annual Work Plans, is the provision of statistics and resources to support business enhancement and new investment decisions.
