PG Bid to bring Canada’s Greatest Winter Party to Northern BC

January 25, 2018

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George is bidding to host the 2020 Tim Hortons Brier, often referred to as “Canada’s greatest winter party.”

A cornerstone of the bid is a campaign that gives local residents and northerners the chance to show Curling Canada that Prince George is ready and excited to host this major national event.

Residents can place a $20.20 deposit on an individual Brier tournament ticket that would demonstrate personal commitment and support of the tournament being held in Prince George, thus supporting the bid.

The Brier is one of the world’s premier curling championships and the winner goes on to represent Canada at the world men’s curling championships. The Brier also brings with it a legendary party atmosphere.

“2020 is the 100th anniversary of the first curling club in Prince George so what better time to host the Brier in our city?” says Lyn Hall, Mayor of Prince George.

“I’m calling on all curling fans in Northern BC and anyone who loves to have a great time to show Curling Canada what we already know: Prince George and Northern BC have the spirit and the people to put on one of the very biggest sporting events and greatest winter parties in the country!”

The Brier has been held for approximately 90 years, but has not yet been hosted in Northern BC.

The $20.20 deposits can be placed online or by phone at 1-888-293-6613.

In addition, everyone who buys a 2020 Brier ticket deposit will have their name entered in a draw to win four tickets to Cirque du Soleil’s CRYSTAL for opening night on Wednesday, April 25.

“Our bid committee aims to sell 2020 ticket deposits at $20.20 each by April 15 in order to demonstrate that the community fully embraces the Brier and the bid,” says CN Centre Manager Glen Mikkelsen, Chair of the Prince George 2020 Brier Bid Committee.

“Purchasing a tournament pass reserves a seat to all draws of the Brier including the playoffs and final game, and to some, perhaps most importantly, provides access to the celebrated “Brier Patch” – the beating heart of the tournament party every year.”

Ticket prices are still undetermined, though the Full Event Package at the 2018 Brier is $499. All ticket deposits will be refunded should Prince George not win the 2020 Brier. However, if the bid is successful, deposits will not be refunded.

Prince George’s bid must be submitted to Curling Canada by June 30, 2018. The successful bid is expected to be announced sometime this fall. The 2020 Brier is likely to be held from February 28 to March 9 of that year.
